Has anyone used blogs or podcasts in their classroom? If so, how?
2. Have you envisioned using blogs or podcasts in the classroom? Explain how?

This will be a transition year for me. I will be leaving 7 years of 4th for middle school math (7/8 grade). My current vision would utilize podcasts as lecture recovery, and possibly using podcasts for enrichment. I would desire to compact the curriculum (testing for areas of competency for differentiation {depth, complexity, novelty, and acceleration} - NOT more of the same) and use podcasts to communicate the activity. Moreover, the podcast could be completed by kids that want extra work (does that happen in middle school - ;)).

As far as blogs...well, I was actually considering a class forum for extra help (homework assistance). Students could sign up to moderate? Maybe a forum could support a problem of the week, something in addition to the curriculum, or possibly a group problem. This idea will need some molding.

What are your thoughts regarding these ideas? Comments or suggestions are welcome.

Session 9 - July 19, Online
Educational Blogs

Assignments/Tasks Due
Discussion

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://spiderduncan.blogspot.com/2006/07/9-educational-blogs.html' title='9. Textbook
a. Explanation of 1.1-1.6
b. homework
2. Commercial break
a. Coauthor puts plug in for dansmath.com
3. Math for masses
a. Math or Myth
a. Probability – baseball saying, “He is due for a hit soon…”
7. Advanced Math
a. Rate of growth
i. Linear – height of person
ii. Quadratic – falling rock
iii. Exponential – growth of vehicles
iv. Factorial –
v. Logistic – spreading of a rumor
b. challenge problem
8. Math humor (this one is for bigjoe - http://www.dansmath.com/pages/jokes.html )

Critique

1. Production

a. Positive – Podcast was crisp and clear. Sound effects changed as show progressed. Commercial breaks provided humor, further information, and a chance to reflect on prior lessons.
b. Negative – NA.

2. Content
a. Positive – Dan Bach is very knowledgeable and understands how to explain mathematical concepts to the average person. Great creativity was displayed through his continual explanation of concepts through real world examples (a key feature for great math teachers – let move beyond rote understanding) Furthermore, he bridged understanding by tying common jargon to terms used within the discipline (product for multiplication). It is very evident that the author seeks to subscribers understand math and involve them in the show (problem of the week or questions - will air MP3 questions sent to him).
b. Negative – Used terms such as “borrow, steal, carry” without stating mathematical equivalent.

Lessons Learned
1. Content in mind - mathematics
2. Show segments - with new information
3. Commerical breaks - lighter information
4. For example, the Bono interview focused on opening ended questions that allowed the interviewee to expand as much as he deemed necessary. While the mathgrad interview had most questions, in some cases they were closed, and provided short precise answers. Similarly, the interviewer needs to determine before hand what type of control they desire for the interview. Closed questions control the interview while open questions distribute power between interviewer and interviewee.

Let me see, what would Oprah do?

Session 5 - July 5, Online
Listen to Podcast Interviews

Assignments/Tasks Due
Podcast/Blogging Activity 4
Learn About Inteviews
Discussion

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://spiderduncan.blogspot.com/2006/07/5-listen-to-podcast-interviews.html' title='5. Here ETEC 67.6 “the information station” we pride ourselves on bringing the public in dept information on controversial topics.

If you were lucky enough to have joined us yesterday, you would have remembered the scintillating conversation that I had with Dr. Harry Holstein. The kind doctor informed us that cow’s are now withholding calcium from their white wonder tonic. (cow sound) Dr. Holstein translated this message as, “We the bovine community want humans to stop pilfering out milk. We don’t take yours.”

And now, a word from our sponsors. (beans track)

Was that really sent from the head office? (laughter) Oh, we are back on the air.

Due to public demand, ETEC 67.6 will be broadcasting the basics of interviewing process. Joining us from the east coast is Dr. George Rodman of Brooklyn College. Rodman is the current chair for the department of television and radio. This gentleman comes with credentials; he earned his PhD from USC in 1975. Please welcome Doctor George Rodman. (applause)

GR – Thanks for having me on the show. That was a really interesting clip you had earlier.
KD – Oh, the beans clip, that was a present from our sister station RGAS 87.1. They are always looking for a good joke.
GR – Humor is good for the soul. Did you know that in some cultures public flatulence is a sign of trust? It shows another person that you value and respect them. Keith, why don’t you let one rip?
KD – Incidentally, I did have beans earlier, are you sure?
GR – Of course.
KD – (fart) That felt great. My wife will really appreciate if I can get things cleared up here at the office.
GR – My turn. (fart)
KD – Ok then, lets get on with the show. Dr. Rodman please tell us about the interview process.
GR – An interview is defined as a form of oral communication between two parties, at least one of whom has a preconceived and serious purpose, and both of whom speak and listen from time to time.
KD – Exhilarating. Before we get carried away, I would like to announce that we will be giving a prize at the end of the show. Our sponsor has provided use with a few crates of baked beans, navy beans, and my favorite pinto beans.
GR – Alright, during this episode I wish to explain three key factors that the interviewee should understand. First of all, the prepared interviewee should clarify the interviewer’s goals, next clarify your own goals, and finally do your homework.
KD-Oustanding Dr. Rodman. Do you have any hints or tips while the interview is in process?
GR – Of course. There are four simple techniques you should use. First of all, give clear, detailed answers. Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes and be as specific and helpful as you hope others would be for you.

Next, keep on subject. It is sometimes tempting to go overboard with your answer, sidetracking the discussion into areas that won’t help the interviewer.

(fart)

Then correct any misunderstanding. Sometimes an interview will misinterpret your message.

KD – (fart) That was mine!

GR - Lastly, cover your own agenda. It is important to keep these in mind during the interview so that you can satisfy your own needs in a way that is compatible with the interviewer’s purpose. (applause).

KD – Let’s take a quick commercial break.

(Meow song)

Ok then. It seems we have run out of time. Thanks Dr. Rodman for joining us at ETEC 67.6. Next hour is politics, can you believe what they’re telling us.

(Clinton clip)

(Close)

Session 3 - June 28, Online
Envisioning and Actualizing your Podcast

Assignments/Tasks Due
Podcast/Blogging Activity 3
Your First Real Podcast
Discussion

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://spiderduncan.blogspot.com/2006/06/3-envisioning-and-actualizing-your.html' title='3. Orientation

Session 1 - June 21, Face to Face Optional
Orientation

Assignments/Tasks Due
Podcast/Blogging Activity 1
Establish Required Accounts

This fall I am moving from 7 years of teaching 4th grade to 7/8th grade mathematics. Deserts Sands USD is opening a new middle school entitled Colonel Mitchell Paige Middle School.

All of the aforementioned information relates directly to this course. My first intentions involve creating recovered lectures. However, I can easily see podcasting be integrated as an enrichment medium. After talking with Dr. Newberry about podcasts, I am keenly interested

Podcasts
1. Mathgrad.com Maps and the lies they tell us
Through investigation, the math grad introduces the concept of 2 dimensional map distortion. The metric properties of maps include area, shape, direction, bearing, distance, and scale. For example, a pseudo cylindrical projection is great for preserving country size, but poor for representing shape and location. Lastly, math grade relates maps to functions and points on a piece of paper.

Educationally speaking, this pod cast would fit the enrichment model. Students can understand the relevance of functions through the exploration of maps. Overall, the pod cast was engaging, great sound, and well thought-out.

2. Chess is Cool Podcast - Episode 1
Alexandra Kosteniuk, a 22 year old female Grandmaster (really good player), tells a little about herself, about the week in chess (Bastia where Milov beat Anand and Beer-Sheva where the Chinese are leading). Lastly, she gives a tip about visualizing chess pieces on a board and leaves the reader with a puzzle to solve.

Aside from the resonating voice introduction, the pod cast was engaging, well scripted with clear sound. As a retired chess coach (maybe coming out of retirement) I will be the first to admit that chess is not the most popular sport in the world. However, these pod casts may provide a way for students to feel a sense of community.

3. Podcast for Teachers - 2nd Episode

Episode 2 discusses ways that education can use sound editing software, student publishing, pod casts, mobile learning and 'amphibian experiences' (“kissing a lot of frogs” was the term Kathy King used to describe her search for new technologies).

While this episode provided excellent technical aspects, the sound was less than polished. As one examines archives, the grass roots episode is replace by a more polished casting. This is an excellent resource for educators desiring quality technology integration.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://spiderduncan.blogspot.com/2006/06/1-orientation.html' title='1.
