Online Blitz Chess - 4 minute game

1. Navigate to http://www.eudesign.com/chessops/ch-clear.htm then click on “Dynamic Practice Board” to move pieces as the podcast plays. Have this board in a window that you can access.
2. If you don't play chess a lot you may have difficulty following the game, get ready to pause the podcast. It goes fast (Thanks Dale). I had to "trim the fat" and speed things up to avoid uploading difficulties.
3. Have show notes with game summary (Nxd4 etc.) may aid you in making accurate moves. Some may prefer visual to audio.

9. Educational Blogs

retrieved from Garry Larson's Far Side comic.

Questions for the daring:

1. Has anyone used blogs or podcasts in their classroom? If so, how?
2. Have you envisioned using blogs or podcasts in the classroom? Explain how?

This will be a transition year for me. I will be leaving 7 years of 4th for middle school math (7/8 grade). My current vision would utilize podcasts as lecture recovery, and possibly using podcasts for enrichment. I would desire to compact the curriculum (testing for areas of competency for differentiation {depth, complexity, novelty, and acceleration} - NOT more of the same) and use podcasts to communicate the activity. Moreover, the podcast could be completed by kids that want extra work (does that happen in middle school - ;)).

As far as blogs...well, I was actually considering a class forum for extra help (homework assistance). Students could sign up to moderate? Maybe a forum could support a problem of the week, something in addition to the curriculum, or possibly a group problem. This idea will need some molding.

What are your thoughts regarding these ideas? Comments or suggestions are welcome.

Critique

1. Production

a. Positive – Podcast was crisp and clear. Sound effects changed as show progressed. Commercial breaks provided humor, further information, and a chance to reflect on prior lessons.
b. Negative – NA.

2. Content
a. Positive – Dan Bach is very knowledgeable and understands how to explain mathematical concepts to the average person. Great creativity was displayed through his continual explanation of concepts through real world examples (a key feature for great math teachers – let move beyond rote understanding) Furthermore, he bridged understanding by tying common jargon to terms used within the discipline (product for multiplication). It is very evident that the author seeks to subscribers understand math and involve them in the show (problem of the week or questions - will air MP3 questions sent to him).
b. Negative – Used terms such as “borrow, steal, carry” without stating mathematical equivalent.

Lessons Learned
1. Content in mind - mathematics
2. Show segments - with new information
3. Commerical breaks - lighter information
4. Draw audience - feedback

2. flowed well
a. general
b. specifics
c. personal
3. excellent synergy between math and technology

Lessons Learned:
Aside from asking thought provoking questions, I belive that the interviewer needs to understand the content that he is drawing out. For example, the Bono interview focused on opening ended questions that allowed the interviewee to expand as much as he deemed necessary. While the mathgrad interview had most questions, in some cases they were closed, and provided short precise answers. Similarly, the interviewer needs to determine before hand what type of control they desire for the interview. Closed questions control the interview while open questions distribute power between interviewer and interviewee.

Let me see, what would Oprah do?

Show Notes
(open)

KD – Good afternoon and thanks for joining out listening audience. Here ETEC 67.6 “the information station” we pride ourselves on bringing the public in dept information on controversial topics.

If you were lucky enough to have joined us yesterday, you would have remembered the scintillating conversation that I had with Dr. Harry Holstein. The kind doctor informed us that cow’s are now withholding calcium from their white wonder tonic. (cow sound) Dr. Holstein translated this message as, “We the bovine community want humans to stop pilfering out milk. We don’t take yours.”

And now, a word from our sponsors. (beans track)

Was that really sent from the head office? (laughter) Oh, we are back on the air.

Due to public demand, ETEC 67.6 will be broadcasting the basics of interviewing process. Joining us from the east coast is Dr. George Rodman of Brooklyn College. Rodman is the current chair for the department of television and radio. This gentleman comes with credentials; he earned his PhD from USC in 1975. Please welcome Doctor George Rodman. (applause)

GR – Thanks for having me on the show. That was a really interesting clip you had earlier.
KD – Oh, the beans clip, that was a present from our sister station RGAS 87.1. They are always looking for a good joke.
GR – Humor is good for the soul. Did you know that in some cultures public flatulence is a sign of trust? It shows another person that you value and respect them. Keith, why don’t you let one rip?
KD – Incidentally, I did have beans earlier, are you sure?
GR – Of course.
KD – (fart) That felt great. My wife will really appreciate if I can get things cleared up here at the office.
GR – My turn. (fart)
KD – Ok then, lets get on with the show. Dr. Rodman please tell us about the interview process.
GR – An interview is defined as a form of oral communication between two parties, at least one of whom has a preconceived and serious purpose, and both of whom speak and listen from time to time.
KD – Exhilarating. Before we get carried away, I would like to announce that we will be giving a prize at the end of the show. Our sponsor has provided use with a few crates of baked beans, navy beans, and my favorite pinto beans.
GR – Alright, during this episode I wish to explain three key factors that the interviewee should understand. First of all, the prepared interviewee should clarify the interviewer’s goals, next clarify your own goals, and finally do your homework.
KD-Oustanding Dr. Rodman. Do you have any hints or tips while the interview is in process?
GR – Of course. There are four simple techniques you should use. First of all, give clear, detailed answers. Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes and be as specific and helpful as you hope others would be for you.

Next, keep on subject. It is sometimes tempting to go overboard with your answer, sidetracking the discussion into areas that won’t help the interviewer.

(fart)

Then correct any misunderstanding. Sometimes an interview will misinterpret your message.

KD – (fart) That was mine!

GR - Lastly, cover your own agenda. It is important to keep these in mind during the interview so that you can satisfy your own needs in a way that is compatible with the interviewer’s purpose. (applause).

KD – Let’s take a quick commercial break.

(Meow song)

Ok then. It seems we have run out of time. Thanks Dr. Rodman for joining us at ETEC 67.6. Next hour is politics, can you believe what they’re telling us.
